Day by day itinerary

Day 1: Johannesburg – Antananarivo SA8252 JNB B TNR 1000 1410 Arrival at the Ivato International airport. Meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 2: Antananarivo – Andasibe: 150 km, 3 to 4 hrs drive, asphalt road Departure to the Eastern coast of Madagascar. About 3 to 4 hours drive till Andasibe National Park. Located at the heart of the rainforest, we can see wildlife near our lodge: geckos, lemurs, including the largest living lemur, the lovely Indri. Périnet reserve abound the collection of endemic birds of the island like Madagascar blue pigeon, Madagascar Flufftail, Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher, Rufous-headed and Pittal-like Ground-Roller, Red-tailed Vanga, Madagascar Nightjar, Greater Vasa Parrot, Blue Vanga, Sunbird-Asity, Spectacled Greenbul, Ward’s shrike-flycatcher. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 3 and Day 4: Andasibe Full days with your specialized guide for bird-watching at Analamazaotra and Mantadia National Park. Four of the five endemic families are here: the Ground-rollers, the Cuckoo Roller, the Malagasy Warblers ,the famous vangas as well as the endemic sub-family, the Couas. We will also encounter the resident wildlife at Andasibe National Park like the Indri, Brown lemur, Wooly lemur, Diademed sifakas, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, Eastern grey bamboo lemur, Goodman’s mouse lemur and many other nocturnal lemurs. Incredible insect like the Giraffe necked Weevil and many species of reptiles and amphibians including the weird leaf-tailed geckos and the Parson’s Chameleon, an immense chameleon. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 5: Andasibe – Antananarivo : 150 km, 3 to 4 hrs drive, asphalt road Morning at Torotorofotsy marsh to see the Meller’s Duck and the elusive Slender-Billed Flufftail. Here we will also see the beautiful Golden Mantela. Drive back to Antananarivo in the early afternoon. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 6: Antananarivo – Toliara – Ifaty : 1 hr flight + 30km, 30 min drive Flight to Toliara and transfer to the beach resort of Ifaty located 30 km North of Toliara. Discover of some birds like the Madagascar Plover. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 7: Ifaty: Bird-watching at Reniala reserve: Early departure to avoid the heat. The spiny fry forest is composed of baobabs, euphorbia, cactus-like plants and octopus tree. It is home to Sub-desert Brush-warbler, Madagascar Kestrel, Sickle-billed and Lafresnaye’s Vanga, Sub-desert Mesite, Long-tailed Ground roller, Running and Red capped Couas, Archbold’s and the elusive Banded Kestrel. Back to hotel for a little break. Possibility to snorkel in the lagoon. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 8: Ifaty – Toliara : 30km Last birding in Ifaty and transfer to Toliara. Visit of the flat-topped mountain known as La Tabla to see the Verreaux’s Coua and recently discovered Red-shouldered Vanga. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 9: Toliara – Zombitse – Ranohira : 240km, 4 hrs drive , asphalt road Visit of Zombitse National Park in the morning to see the rarest endemic Appert’s greenbul and other bird species like the Giant Coua and Crested Coua. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 10: Ranohira – Ranomafana: 345km, 6 to 7 hrs drive, asphalt road Long day driving from Ranohira to Ranomafana National Park. Nocturnal walk where we might see rufus mouse lemur and stripped civet, one of Madagascar predator. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 11 and Day 12: Ranomafana Two full days early morning bird walk at Ranomafana National Park. Ranomafana is similar to Andasibe rainforest. Here we complete our list of those which we missed at Andasibe. You might see brown emutail, yellow-browed oxylabes, the extremely rare slender-billed flufftail, Madagascar snipe, Meller’s duck and the elusive red-legged ground roller. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 13: Ranomafana – Antananarivo: 435km, 8 to 9 hrs drive, asphalt road Full day driving from Ranomafana to Antananarivo . Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 14: Antananarivo – Mahajanga – Ankarafantsika : 1 hr flight + 114km, 2 hrs drive asphalt road Transfer to the airport and fly to Mahajanga; then drive to Ankaranfantsika. Ankarafantsika National Park conserves one of the last vast dry deciduous forests on the island. We might see numerous endemic birds of the region including Schlegel’s Asity, Van Dam’s Vanga, White-breasted Mesite and Sakalava Weaver. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 15: Ankarafantsika Bird watching at Ampijoroa forest station and Ravelobe Lake. Other birds we hope to see are the endangered Madagascar Fish Eagle, Rufous, Chabert’s and Blue Vangas. Many species of lemurs can be found here, as Coquerel’s Sifaka, Mongoose lemur, Western Avahi and Dwarf and Mouse lemurs. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 16: Ankarafantsika – Mahajanga – Antananarivo : 114km, 2 hrs drive + 1 hr flight Transfer to the airport and fly to Antananarivo. Arrival in Antananarivo, transfer to your hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 17: Antananarivo – Johannesburg SA8253 TNR JNB A 1500 1740 Transfer to the airport and fly abroad.
